The White Room
Designers: Katie O’Brian, Anette Hamre, Michelle Porter, Carly Coghill & Km Burnes, QUT Built Environment & engineering, Interior Design
Client: Inside Home and Design show
Category: Emerging student designer- Three Dimensional Design
Design Statement:
A deaf girl, her eyes are only 16. “post-it” notes are her lifeline, they help strangers become friends, and she sits on the grass field at lunch, finding four - leaf clovers. She loves going to music festivals, the crowded moshpit, supported by a thousand hands, feeling the bass. Everyone carries their music in their mp3-players or iPods’, listening with their ears. She carries her in her chest and feels it through her heartbeat.
Music to her is not sound, but vibration.
Above is a part of the narrative that was created for the “client”, a deaf girl who became the essence of this project. The text relates directly to design elements created in the room, such as the grass field represented by the shagpile rug, vibration as experienced through a subwoofer heartbeat and hands represented through latex gloves, upon completion the room could be experienced on a pure aesthetic level.
Award of merit
Category: Emerging student designer- Three Dimensional Design
Judges comments: this conceptual space is a response to the needs of a hearing impaired music lover. It blurs the boundaries between sculpture and environment by emphasizing our sensual connections to form and material. The result is an innovative and refreshing exploration of the phenomenon of colour, and a humours and sensitive interpretation of the brief.
