Emir
’Emir’ is a versatile ”sofa for one”, developed during BA studies at Bergen National Academy of the Arts. The shape is inviting, spatious and defined. Still, one does not percieve the chair as “big and heavy”, as the construction makes an open undercarriage and the calm round form possible. The chair has been developed for private and public spaces, as an alternative to traditional polyurethane based chairs and sofas. ’Emir’ presents well from any angle, even below, where there are no visible fittings.
The chair allows users of any shape to feel well in a public space. It hosts two good friends, or one person alone - with a variety of seating possibilities. The combination of nosag and bonell springs gives a firm, yet comfortable seating, and provides a notably higher backrest in use, than what it seems at first glance. ’Emir’ does not swing, as its purpose is to make the users move, rather than the chair.
The carrying outer shell makes the chair less vulnerable, and the dynamic form possible without a massive internal framework. This helps keeping down weight, assembly time and materials used, and allows for a slight built-in suspension.
Only high grade natural materials are used in ’Emir’. Besides the environmental arguments for using hairlock, natural latex foam, springs and woolen felt, the solution provides superior comfort compared with standard solutions for upholstered furniture. The materials breathes, and returns to their origial state even after many years use. For the undercarriage, polished stainless steel is used to ensure equal longevity as the rest of the chair. At time of disposal, the components can be separated for further treatment like degradation, reuse and recycling.
